Hidden Treasures

From the outside, they are a fortress. They stand tall in the midst of downtown. Their height is emphasized by the exteriors made of a variety of materials such as glass. Some of them reflect light which dances and blinds those driving around them.

They are the business buildings of downtown Minneapolis – surrounded by a grid streets and filled with what we cannot see from the outside.

The inner world of the downtown structures, connected at street-level by streets and sidewalks while skyways connect them above, are exciting to those who experience for the first time.

I happened upon such wonder while the girl attended practice for her Spotlight night last week (click here to read more about that).

What hides inside these buildings?

  • Restaurants
  • Bars
  • YMCA
  • Other work-out worlds such as LA Fitness
  • Macy’s
  • Coffee shops
  • Tailors
  • Massage therapists
  • Eye doctors

And the list goes on…

In fact, just about any business that you could imagine in your town exists inside the the downtown world inside the tall buildings that seem a bit scary to a girl from North Dakota.

I found something beautiful there…

If you look closely, you will see a girl nestled in the corner of the black landing. She is reading a book. Up the staircase, there was a fountain which sounded a bit like a waterfall.

What an excellent place to be…quiet…

From the outside, the buildings would not give any indication of what is inside.  They are merely a shell to protect the inside beauty.

I wonder sometimes if our own dull or painted exteriors hide and protect an inner beauty that some find while others do not.  Are we like these buildings?  Do we have more to us than what is on the outside?  Is there an inner quiet – a place for reflection?  A place to find ourselves…and possibly others?

Are our exteriors so formidable that others dare not venture any farther? Do they do more than protect but actually reflect and blind others from wanting to get closer?

And do we lack the sight it takes to look past the blinding outsides of others who have put great fortresses to protect themselves?

The interesting thing about these buildings is that they welcome anyone in.  They have doors, and they have skyways connecting them to each.  They may appear closed off, but they are not.  We do not have to launch a full-scale attack in order to find their beautiful innards (yes – I used that funky word because I needed a little comic relief.  Heavy stuff, huh?).

What do our doors look like?  Do we have skyways to connect ourselves to others?

And most importantly, do we realize the beauty inside of us?

I do say that because of anything that we have done to make ourselves beautiful.  No,  what I am getting is that we are created in the image of the one Creator, and there is beauty in that.  Sometimes I fear that we forget that.  I know I do.  And when we forget that, we put up walls to hide inside.  We batten down the hatches as if we are going on a submarine dive.  We do all that we can to become impermeable to outsiders.

What is it that we fear?  And does the truth about our beauty make any difference at all?
